Eligibility
The Bessie Minor Charitable Fund awards grants to programs that provide direct service to help with the implementation or expansion of literacy programs for children who are below grade level or experiencing difficulty reading; to develop reading and writing skills at all age levels; and, to develop programs in the arts, languages and sciences for preschool, primary and secondary school-aged students. We believe interaction has a powerful positive impact on literacy, reading and the arts. While the Bessie Minor Charitable Fund may occasionally provide grants for equipment alone, strong preference will be given to applications that incorporate project or program elements.
Grants are made only to nonprofit organizations certified as tax exempt under Sections 501(c)(3) or 170(c)of the Internal Revenue Code which include educational institutions, governmental institutions and publicly supported charitable organizations.
Preference will be given to organizations applying for grants that are located within the communities served by daily and/or weekly newspapers in the Swift Communications, Inc. family of publications and websites (see www.swiftcom.com for a listing of those communities).
